The Cameronia was a passenger liner that was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1917 and then used as a troopship in the Mediterranean. On 15th April, 1917, HMT Cameronia, as she was then known, was en route to Alexandria in Egypt from Marseilles in France when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-33 when 150 miles east of the Malta. She had 2650 troops aboard plus her crew and sank within forty minutes with the loss of 210 lives. One of the soldiers who did not survive was Alfred Stonhold of the Royal Army Service Corps. |
